Santa Barbara has another reason to celebrate, and this time the recognition comes from one of the world's best-known travel publications.

Santa Barbara, California, has been ranked #5 among the Best Small Cities in the United States in Condé Nast Traveler's 2026 Readers' Choice Awards. The annual awards are determined by readers who rate their travel experiences across a wide range of destinations and travel categories.

Santa Barbara Named #5 Best Small City in the U.S. for 2026

The 2026 Readers' Choice Awards attracted 798,867 votes, making it another significant year for one of the travel industry's best-known reader-voted awards programs. The 2026 results were published October 6, 2026.

For residents and businesses throughout California's 805 region, Santa Barbara's appearance in the top five is especially noteworthy. The city is one of the signature destinations of the Central Coast and one of the most recognizable communities in the 805.

Santa Barbara Ranks #5 Among America's Best Small Cities

In the Condé Nast Traveler's The Best Cities in the United States: 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards, Santa Barbara came in at #5.

Charleston, South Carolina, took the #1 spot, followed by Alexandria, Virginia, at #2; Santa Fe, New Mexico, at #3; Greenville, South Carolina, at #4; and Santa Barbara at #5.

The remainder of the top 10 included Lexington, Kentucky, at #6; Savannah, Georgia, at #7; Healdsburg, California, at #8; San Juan, Puerto Rico, at #9; and St. Augustine, Florida, at #10.

That means Santa Barbara was the highest-ranked California destination in this year's Best Small Cities list. Healdsburg, another California destination, also earned a spot in the top 10 at #8.

What Makes Santa Barbara Such a Popular Destination?

Santa Barbara's location is a big part of its appeal. Situated along California's Central Coast, the city is framed by the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Santa Ynez Mountains to the north.

That combination gives Santa Barbara something that few destinations can duplicate: beaches, mountains, scenic roads, outdoor recreation, a walkable downtown, historic neighborhoods and a distinctive coastal atmosphere all within a relatively compact area.

The city is also known for its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. White stucco buildings, red tile roofs, landscaped courtyards and historic structures contribute to Santa Barbara's unmistakable visual identity.

The city's architectural character is particularly noticeable in areas around downtown, State Street, the Santa Barbara County Courthouse, the Santa Barbara Mission and other historic parts of the community.

The American Riviera

Santa Barbara is often associated with the nickname "American Riviera," a reference to its coastal setting, climate and Mediterranean-inspired character.

Condé Nast Traveler also highlighted the city's combination of its Central Coast location, mountains, ocean, architecture and generally temperate climate in its 2026 ranking.

The setting helps make Santa Barbara attractive throughout the year. Visitors can spend a morning at the beach, explore downtown shops and restaurants in the afternoon, and head toward the foothills or nearby wine country later in the day.

For travelers coming from Los Angeles and other parts of Southern California, Santa Barbara can also serve as a convenient destination for a weekend getaway without requiring a long-distance trip.

Beaches, Waterfront and Outdoor Activities

Santa Barbara's coastline is one of the city's biggest attractions.

The waterfront provides opportunities for walking, cycling, sightseeing and enjoying views of the Channel Islands and Pacific Ocean. Stearns Wharf, one of the city's best-known landmarks, extends into the harbor area and provides another popular place to experience the waterfront.

Beyond the beaches, the Santa Ynez Mountains provide a dramatic backdrop and access to hiking, scenic drives and other outdoor activities.

The result is a destination where visitors can choose between a relaxing beach vacation and a more active trip focused on hiking, cycling, kayaking, sightseeing or exploring the surrounding landscape.

A Strong Food and Wine Destination

Santa Barbara has also developed a reputation as a food and wine destination.

The city offers everything from casual restaurants and longtime local favorites to upscale dining, cafes, bakeries, breweries and cocktail bars. The surrounding Santa Barbara County wine region adds another major attraction for visitors interested in vineyards and wine tasting.

The Santa Barbara area provides access to several distinct wine-growing regions, including the Santa Ynez Valley, making it possible to combine a coastal trip with a day exploring vineyards and small communities farther inland.

For 805 residents, that proximity is part of what makes Santa Barbara particularly appealing. A trip to the beach, dinner downtown and a wine-country excursion can all be part of the same weekend.

Santa Barbara's Historic Character

While Santa Barbara is a modern tourism destination, its history remains an important part of the city's identity.

The Santa Barbara Mission, founded in 1786, is one of the most recognizable historic landmarks in the region. The city's historic architecture and neighborhoods also reflect the area's Spanish and Mexican heritage and its development during California's early statehood.

The 1925 Santa Barbara earthquake was another defining moment in the city's history. Much of the community was rebuilt following the devastating earthquake, contributing to the architectural character that visitors see throughout downtown Santa Barbara today.

This mixture of history and modern amenities is one of the reasons Santa Barbara can appeal to travelers looking for more than a traditional beach destination.

A Major Destination in California's 805 Region

Santa Barbara's #5 ranking is also notable because the city is part of the 805 region covered by In 805.

The 805 encompasses Ventura, Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, creating a large and diverse section of California's Central Coast. Within that region, Santa Barbara has long been one of the most recognizable destinations for tourism, hospitality, dining, wine and recreation.

For people who live elsewhere in the 805, the recognition is a good reminder that some of California's most popular destinations are right here in our own backyard.

National Recognition Brings More Attention to Santa Barbara

Travel awards can bring additional attention to destinations that already have strong tourism industries, and Santa Barbara's appearance near the top of the 2026 Readers' Choice Awards gives the city another opportunity to attract visitors.

Condé Nast Traveler's Readers' Choice Awards are based on reader ratings and cover numerous travel categories. According to the publication's methodology, the 2026 survey was open from April 1 through June 30, 2026, and results were tabulated by Condé Nast. Candidates needed to meet minimum response and rating requirements to be eligible for an award.

That makes the Santa Barbara ranking different from an editorial list created solely by a publication's staff. The recognition reflects the experiences and ratings submitted by the publication's readership.

Santa Barbara Continues to Get Noticed

The 2026 Condé Nast Traveler ranking isn't the first time Santa Barbara has received national travel recognition. The destination has appeared in previous Readers' Choice Awards, including recognition as a Best Small City in earlier years.

Visit Santa Barbara also maintains a collection of current awards and honors as part of its destination press resources, reflecting the continued attention Santa Barbara receives from travel publications and organizations.

For a community that combines a famous coastline, historic architecture, nearby mountains, wine country, restaurants, hotels and outdoor activities, the continued recognition is another indication of Santa Barbara's importance as a Central Coast destination.

Why the Recognition Matters to the 805

For In 805, the story is about more than a number on a national travel list.

Santa Barbara is an important part of the 805's identity, economy and tourism industry. Visitors who come to Santa Barbara also experience the broader Central Coast, whether they continue north toward San Luis Obispo County, travel south into Ventura County, or explore the communities and attractions throughout Santa Barbara County.

The ranking also provides a national spotlight for local restaurants, hotels, attractions, retailers, tour operators and other businesses that make Santa Barbara a popular place to visit.

Planning a Santa Barbara Getaway

Whether you're visiting Santa Barbara, California for the first time or have lived in the 805 for years, the city offers plenty to explore.

A Santa Barbara getaway can be as simple as a day at the beach and dinner downtown, or it can become a multi-day trip that includes historic attractions, outdoor activities, wine tasting, shopping, museums, restaurants and nearby coastal communities.

And because Santa Barbara is part of the 805, locals don't necessarily have to travel far to experience a destination that travelers from around the country are discovering.
