A Modern Library Designed for a Growing Moorpark Community
Moorpark is turning the page on a major new chapter for its community. Construction is officially underway on the New Moorpark City Library, a long-planned project designed to meet the growing needs of residents while helping anchor a revitalized downtown core.
Approved by the Moorpark City Council on August 6, 2025, the construction contract marks the culmination of nearly a decade of planning, public outreach, and fiscal preparation. With work beginning in Fall 2025, the new library represents one of the city’s most significant civic investments in recent years.
A Library Designed for a Growing Community
The decision to build a new library came after the City of Moorpark recognized that the existing facility could no longer adequately serve Moorpark’s expanding population. A comprehensive Library Needs Assessment and Building Program study confirmed the demand for a larger, more flexible, and modern public library space.
The new facility is intended to support everything from traditional library services to community programming, educational events, and public gatherings—positioning it as a true community hub rather than just a place to check out books.
Prime Downtown Location on High Street
In 2016, the City Council selected a highly visible site on the north side of High Street, directly across from the Moorpark Post Office. The location was chosen strategically to:
- Support ongoing downtown development
- Provide easy access for residents
- Serve nearby neighborhood schools
- Lay the foundation for a future civic center
The library is a cornerstone of the City’s broader Civic Center Master Plan, which envisions a future city hall and civic complex adjacent to the library, creating a strong civic hub at the west end of High Street.
Agrarian-Inspired Architecture with a Modern Twist
One of the most distinctive aspects of the new Moorpark City Library is its agrarian-inspired design, approved by City Council on June 1, 2022, with extensive community input.
The architectural style pays tribute to Moorpark’s agricultural roots, dating back to the late 1800s, when the area was primarily a farming community. The building is designed to evoke the feel of a repurposed barn, blending rustic character with modern functionality.
Design highlights include:
- Barn-style doors and accordion windows
- Outdoor porches that allow programs to spill outside
- Warm interior spaces with wood beams
- Abundant natural light
- Energy-efficient, modern building systems
The result is a welcoming space that feels both timeless and forward-looking—reflecting Moorpark’s past while serving its future.
Community Support Through the Library Brick Fundraiser
Residents and supporters can leave a lasting mark on the new library through the Commemorative Brick Fundraiser. Organized in partnership with the Moorpark Friends of the Library and the Moorpark Morning Rotary Club, the fundraiser allows individuals, families, and organizations to purchase personalized bricks for the library’s entry walkway.
The campaign not only raises funds but also reinforces the community-driven spirit behind the project, helping ensure the new library becomes a cherished public space for generations to come.
A New Chapter for Moorpark and the 805 area of California
More than just a building, the New Moorpark City Library represents an investment in education, connection, and civic life. As construction progresses, the project is expected to draw residents and visitors alike, strengthening downtown Moorpark and enhancing the quality of life in this corner of the 805 area of California.
