Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) is one of the most important military installations on the West Coast. Located along California’s Central Coast, the base supports aviation testing, deep-water port logistics, weapons evaluation, and advanced research operations while employing thousands of local residents.

The origins of NBVC date back to World War II. Naval Air Station Point Mugu was established in 1941 for aviation testing and coastal defense. Port Hueneme was established in 1942 as a deep-water logistics hub and later became home to the Navy’s Seabees. San Nicolas Island has supported remote military testing and tracking operations since the 1930s.

In October 2000, these facilities were merged to form Naval Base Ventura County. Today, the base supports more than 100 tenant commands and employs approximately 19,000 personnel, including active-duty military, civilian employees, and contractors. More than 14,000 of these employees reside in Ventura County,
making it the county’s largest employer.

Three Major Facilities

Point Mugu – Aviation & Weapons Testing

Point Mugu operates the Point Mugu Sea Range, one of the largest instrumented test ranges in the United States. It supports aircraft testing, missile evaluations, radar systems development, telemetry tracking, and advanced defense research across thousands of square miles of air and sea space.

Port Hueneme – Logistics & Seabees

Port Hueneme is home to the Navy’s only deep-water port between Los Angeles and San Francisco. It supports cargo operations, ship deployment logistics, equipment storage, and training for the Seabees (Naval Construction Battalions), who build and maintain military infrastructure worldwide.

San Nicolas Island – Remote Testing

Located approximately 60 miles offshore, San Nicolas Island provides a secure environment for missile testing, telemetry operations, and aviation tracking. Its isolation allows the Navy to conduct controlled testing while maintaining safety for surrounding communities.
