Discover Trout Raising, Lake Stocking & Outdoor Fun at the Fillmore Fish Hatchery

Tucked along the Santa Clara River Valley, the Fillmore Fish Hatchery is one of Ventura County’s most unique and family-friendly outdoor destinations. Operated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, this working trout hatchery has been supporting recreational fishing in Southern California since 1942.

Originally built on a former citrus ranch, the hatchery was designed to take advantage of the region’s clean water and moderate climate. Over the decades, it has been modernized with concrete raceways and improved water systems while continuing its mission: raising healthy trout for lakes and reservoirs across the 805 and beyond.

Today, visitors can walk the grounds, observe thousands of fish, and learn how hatchery operations help sustain fishing opportunities throughout Southern California.

What Kind of Fish Are Raised Here?

The Fillmore Fish Hatchery specializes in raising trout for recreational stocking.

Rainbow Trout

The primary species raised is the Rainbow trout, one of California’s most popular freshwater sport fish. Known for their vibrant pink lateral stripe and energetic fight, rainbow trout are a favorite for anglers of all ages.

In Ventura County and surrounding 805 areas, hatchery-raised rainbow trout are commonly stocked in lakes such as:

  • Lake Casitas
  • Lake Piru
  • Santa Ana River Lakes (regional stocking influence)
  • Various local park lakes and seasonal fishing waters

Best Time to Fish:
Rainbow trout thrive in cooler water temperatures. In the 805 region, the prime fishing season typically runs from late fall through early spring (November–April). After winter storms and scheduled stocking events, fishing activity often increases. Early mornings and late afternoons are usually the most productive times of day.

Fishing Tips:

  • Use light tackle for better sensitivity.
  • Popular baits include PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, and small spinners.
  • After stocking, trout often stay near shore before gradually moving deeper as water temperatures rise.

Brown Trout

The hatchery also produces Brown trout, originally native to Europe but long established in American fisheries. Brown trout are typically more cautious and can grow larger than rainbow trout, making them especially appealing to experienced anglers.

In Southern California waters influenced by hatchery programs, brown trout may be found in:

  • Cooler sections of Lake Casitas
  • Select Ventura and Santa Barbara County reservoirs
  • Higher-elevation lakes and streams in nearby mountain regions

Best Time to Fish:
Brown trout fishing is often strongest in late fall and winter, when cooler water temperatures increase feeding activity. They are known to be more active during low-light conditions, such as early morning, dusk, or overcast days.

Fishing Tips:

  • Browns tend to hold near structure such as rocks, submerged trees, or deeper drop-offs.
  • Artificial lures, small crankbaits, and live bait presentations can be effective.
  • Patience is key — brown trout are often more selective and wary than rainbows.

Fillmore Fish Hatchery - Fish

How the Fillmore Fish Hatchery Works

Fish begin their journey as fertilized eggs delivered from broodstock facilities in Northern California. Once hatched, the young fish are placed in outdoor ponds and raceways supplied with clean, temperature-regulated water averaging around 60°F — ideal for steady growth.

Staff carefully monitor feeding schedules, water quality, and fish health. Protective netting over the ponds helps guard against birds and other predators. After roughly 12 months, the trout reach stocking size and are ready for transport.

Stocking Lakes Across the 805 Area of California

When trout are ready, hatchery crews load them into specialized tanker trucks equipped with oxygenated water systems. From there, the fish are transported to lakes, reservoirs, and streams throughout Ventura County and neighboring counties.

You may find trout from the Fillmore hatchery stocked in popular local fishing spots, particularly during the cooler months. Stocking schedules are typically posted by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and local lake authorities, helping anglers plan their trips.

This program supports recreational fishing, outdoor education, and family traditions across the 805 region.
