A Brief History of the Coachella Music Festival
The Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival was first held in 1999, founded by Goldenvoice promoter Paul Tollett. The original event featured a diverse lineup that emphasized alternative rock, electronic music, and experimental artists, helping establish Coachella as a tastemaker festival rather than a mainstream concert series.
After a brief hiatus, Coachella returned in the early 2000s and steadily grew in size and influence. By the 2010s, it had become a global cultural phenomenon, known not only for its music but also for large-scale art installations, fashion trends, and high-profile celebrity attendance. Over the years, Coachella has been credited with launching major artist comebacks, elevating electronic dance music in the U.S., and introducing American audiences to international performers.
The Current State of Coachella
Today, Coachella is one of the largest and most recognizable music festivals in the world. The modern Coachella Music Festival spans two identical weekends, allowing fans to choose their preferred dates while reducing crowd density. The festival features multiple stages, state-of-the-art production, immersive art displays, curated food and beverage programs, and brand activations throughout the venue.
Coachella’s lineup consistently blends chart-topping headliners with indie artists, electronic DJs, hip-hop performers, and global acts, reflecting current music trends while also pushing creative boundaries. Beyond music, the festival has become a showcase for contemporary art, with massive installations and interactive pieces spread across the festival grounds.
In 2026, Coachella is expected to continue this evolution, offering a highly produced, experience-driven event that appeals to both longtime fans and first-time attendees.
