Description:

The original Bowl was built in Edward Drummond Libbey’s Civic Center Park from 1952 to 1957 by a community effort led by the Ojai Music Festival. The shell was designed by architects Austen Pierpont of Ojai and Roy C. Wilson of Santa Paula. Originally known as “Civic Center Bowl,” and “Festival Bowl,” among other names, it became known as “Libbey Bowl” in the 1980s after Civic Center Park was given to the City of Ojai and renamed Libbey Park.

Inaugurated by Aaron Copland at the 1957 Ojai Music Festival, Libbey Bowl has hosted many of the world’s most influential artists. In addition to serving as the home of the internationally acclaimed Ojai Music Festival, Libbey Bowl has housed important community and cultural events including the Storytelling Festival, Illusions Theater, Fourth of July Celebration, Memorial Day Celebration, Mexican Fiesta, and many others.

By 2008, Libbey Bowl had suffered from over 50 years of wood rot, termite damage, and heavy use which proved irreparable and the Bowl was in danger of being condemned. In the fall of 2008, the City of Ojai and the Ojai Music Festival began working together to build a new Libbey Bowl. Ojai architect David Bury was hired to create a design that evoked the aesthetics, intimacy, and harmony with nature that characterized the original Bowl, as well as to make critical design improvements backstage and for audiences. The Ojai Music Festival, with support from the Ojai Valley Service Foundation, raised over $3 million from its patrons, the Ojai community and donors beyond, to partner with the City of Ojai in building the new Libbey Bowl.

Description:

The mission of the Lobero Theatre Foundation is to maintain and operate the historic Lobero Theatre as a performing arts center and cultural asset to the community of Santa Barbara, and to present the highest quality productions in music, dance, and theatre. About the Theater:
The Lobero is California's oldest, continuously operating theatre. Originally founded in 1873 and rebuilt in 1924, it is recognized as one of Santa Barbara's architectural jewels and a State and City landmark.

From its earliest days, the Lobero has been Santa Barbara’s grand stage for both community and professional performances.

The Lobero flourished in the 1920s with a glittering golden era of “preview performances” for Hollywood. Stage greats Lionel Barrymore, Tallulah Bankhead, and Bela Lugosi, as well as young musicians Vladimir Horowitz and Sergei Rachmaninoff, were among the giants who trod the Lobero Stage.

In the 1940s the talent that came to the Lobero was dazzling in review. A favorite stop for performances between Los Angeles and San Francisco, the Lobero hosted such stars as Dame Judith Anderson, Clark Gable, Basil Rathbone, Ingrid Bergman, Igor Stravinsky, Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra, Martha Graham, Betty Grable and Tyrone Power.

Recent stars include Lynn Redgrave, Jerome Lowenthal, Bobby McFerrin, Marilyn Horne, John Cleese, Jeff, Beau, and Lloyd Bridges, Kathy Bates, Tracy Chapman, John Raitt, James Whitmore, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Hal Holbrook, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Carol Burnett, Dave Brubeck, Michael Feinstein, Debbie Reynolds, and Patrick Stewart.

It is the home stage to most of the major performing arts groups in Santa Barbara including Opera Santa Barbara, State Street Ballet, Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra, Speaking of Stories, Sings Like Hell, CAMA’s Masterseries, Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, Flamenco Arts Festival, Santa Barbara Theatre, Music Academy of the West, and many others.

About the Foundation:
In 1938, the Lobero Theatre Foundation was established specifically to raise funds to maintain and upgrade the physical aspects of the Lobero and to bring community-enhancing events to its stage. Though the theatre was still owned by the city of Santa Barbara, the Foundation's Board of Directors acted as stewards of the building, even raising a record $3.5 million to complete a state-mandated seismic renovation in the early 1990s.

In 1996, the County of Santa Barbara deeded the theatre to the Lobero Theatre Foundation, and today, the Lobero Theatre Foundation continues to raise funds for the benefit of the theatre, and has expanded its mission to support the following activities and audiences:

Youth and Community Programs – The Lobero sponsors many programs for Santa Barbara County students. During the 2006-07 Season along, the Foundation brought nearly 10,000 students to performances at the Lobero free of charge. “Lobero Live” – The Foundation is committed to bringing the best artists and the finest entertainment to the Lobero stage, be it via the Lobero Jazz series, or one of the 15 to 20 other shows the Foundation presents annually.

Performing Arts Initiative – Each year, the Foundation provided $50,000 in production subsidies to the local performing arts organizations who perform on the Lobero stage, including State Street Ballet, Opera Santa Barbara, Flamenco Arts Festival, Music Academy of the West and many more.

Lobero Endowment – The Foundation is actively working to build a $5 million endowment fund to ensure that the Lobero Theatre remains vibrant and accessible for the community of Santa Barbara.

Although the Lobero Theatre Foundation serves as owner and steward of this landmark institution, it is really you, the Lobero donor and ticket buyer, who serve as the true “foundation” of this great organization. The community built the theatre to be its stage and its cultural heart, and the Lobero Theatre Foundation is dedicated to honoring that tradition.
